Chikitsa(Ophthalmology), a speciality
area in traditional medicine of India
(Ayurveda), has to date very few practitioners
and experts compared to other areas such
as bone setting Orthopaedics), Visha chikitsa
(toxicology) or balachikitsa (paediatrics).
Sudarshanam Netra Chikitsalayam in Thiruvalla
in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala
is a well known center for treating various
disorders of the eye. This center was
founded in 1990 under the auspices of
Paramacharya of Kanchi Kama Koti Peedom
Shri Shri. Chandra Sekhara Saraswathi
Swamigal of Kancheepuram.
Dr.B.G.Gokullan, a young
graduate in Ayurveda from the Ayurveda
College, Coimbatore has received extensive
training in traditional ophthalmology
from the traditional Netra Vaidya Sri
N.V.Kutty Krishnan Nair. He was also trained
at “Sankara Netralaya” in
Chennai, a well known modern ophthalmic
institute in Asia, in modern diagnostic
methods. He is the Medical Director of
the center. In the year 1994, he received
a prestigious fellowship from United States
of America named "Ashoka Innovators
for the Public" ( FAIP).
Sudarshanam Netra Chikitsalayam,
the live unit of Netra Foundation is housed
in a 3 acre calm and beautiful land off
to the state high way leading to Sabarimala,
one of the well known pilgrim centres
of Kerala, with a traditional building
which can accommodate upto 4 families
or 10 patients and can treat up to 20
patients at a time. The clientele range
from Kerala as well as from states of
Madhya
Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharastra, Assam,
Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan etc. . The center
is also equipped with modern diagnostic
tools and an in house pharmacy to prepare
special oils, ghee and decoctions beneficial
in eye disorders.
Sudarshanam now extends
its services to more than 6 cities spreading
almost south central Kerala and holds
periodical camps at Mumbai and Jabalpur.
Sudarshanam Netra Chikitsalayam

besides an annex which combined, can accommodate
up to 7 families or 14 patients and can
treat up to 25 patients at a time. The
clientele range from Kerala as well as
from states of Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka,
Maharashtra, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan,
Manipur etc. . The center is also equipped
with modern primary diagnostic tools and
an in house pharmacy to prepare special
oils, ghee and decoctions beneficial in
eye disorders. Sudarshanam has recently
started another extension centre at Maradu,
Kochi with all primary documentation and
diagnostic facilities. This centre also
is capable of hosting 4 patients at a
time.
